When an animal is killed illegally, it is considered animal poaching. It usually occurs due to an animal possessing something rare or valuable, such as ivory or patterned fur. Poachers kill these animals to sell and profit off of them. Illegal wildlife trade is the 5th most profitable illegal trade in the world, and as more animals become endangered, the more these animals’ worth increases. Poaching is most popular in Africa due to the large number of endangered and rare species that live there. While animal reserves are believed to be the best way to help animals, they often force indigenous people off their lands with nowhere to go. This usually causes indigenous people to poach animals and join the illegal wildlife trade in order to feed and provide for their tribes and families. For poaching to be stopped in Africa, there not only needs to be protection for the animals, but for the people and their cultures as well. In addition to wildlife reserves, there should be reserves and protection put in place for the indigenous people of Africa.
